Wraparound was founded just over five years ago by ACE teacher Clare Martin, with one teaching assistant, to cater for the educational needs of one Year 9 autistic student.
This student’s success led to an increasing number of students being referred and so, the wraparound provision grew to cater for these students educational, social and emotional needs. This involved a change of venue to Seymour House, which gave us the use of greater facilities and also gave us access to Youth Workers on-site. Five years on and our numbers are still ever growing. Currently we have 22 students, supported by a team of 26 teaching assistants and 3 teachers.
At its core, Wraparound has always focussed on providing quality, bespoke educational provision for students that require an alternative approach to that used in mainstream and special schools. We have always tailored our educational package to the individual student’s needs, taking into account the student’s interests.
“Old ways won’t open new doors”, and this could be said of the continually changing nature of the Wraparound provision. Our staff have adapted greatly to the ever changing needs of our students and varying range of circumstances and backgrounds that our students face on a daily basis.
The appointment of a Pastoral Manager has given us greater scope to work in partnership with other agencies, all with the view of providing the best support, guidance and encouragement at every stage of a student’s time with us.
“Never mistake motion for progress”, and we never do at Wraparound. Big things have been happening for the Wraparound Secondary provision over the last year.
Due to the success of the Wraparound model, we have established a bases in St Austell and Camborne and we are to be imminently opening another base in Launceston to cater for the referrals we receive across Cornwall.
Large strides are being made towards our goal of opening a new base in Exeter to provide bespoke education for the referrals that we receive in this area.
We are taking active steps towards opening a base in Bournemouth in partnership with The Beaufort Care Group to provide educational packages for children who are in residential care.
We have always been very proud of the feedback we receive from parents and guardians. Below are some of the comments that parents and guardians have made about us:
“I have found staff to be honest, helpful, understanding, and they go the extra mile for their pupils. I have found they are really co-operative to meet each child’s individual needs.” – Parent of a Year 11 Student
“I’m happy with everything because L has never been so settled in his secondary education… I feel that Gaby and other staff members understand L and adapt to his individual needs” – Parent of a Year 11 student.
“The educational placement has been of paramount importance to the placement working. If it weren’t for the educational placement then the care placement would have not been as successful.” – Carer of a Year 12 Student.
With all of this progress happening it would be too easy to lose ourselves, but we have managed to stay grounded and we have never lost sight of the goal. We stand for excellence in education, and giving every learner the opportunity to succeed.
