Profile Joan is a mother of 2, having a son and a daughter. She is a grandmother to 5 grandsons ranging in age from 1 to 15 years old. Joan is now a retired nurse and midwife. She was also former Plymouth City Councillor where she chaired the Health and Wellbeing Scrutiny Panel before becoming Cabinet Member for Children’s Services

 

Joan is now working with Youth Offending Services and Aneurin Bevan Health Board developing Befriending Services in Wales as a volunteer. She also sits on the Scrutiny Panel for Children’s Services Newport, representing the Monmouth Diocese Church in Wales

 

Joan’s interests include reading, gardening travel, politics, cooking, meeting friends and of course very involved with her family. Joan is committed to supporting ACE in all aspects of the services it provides and what it continues to achieve for our children.

Matt Bindon

Profile Matt Bindon is the Vice Chair of Governors at ACE. In his working life he is a PE teacher and senior leader in a Devon secondary school. Matt has had the privilege to work in a number of schools around the country and also been a governor at a South Devon secondary school.

Matt is really enjoying a being a Governor at ACE and has a particular interest in areas of governor responsibility which are Safeguarding, Prevent and Welfare. In his spare time Matt is interested in cars, driving, surfing and spending time with his family.

Simon Mower

Business/Financial interests Employee of Plymouth City Council so any conflict of interest to be declared and I will be removed from decision making process
Profile Simon is currently employed as the Head teacher of the Plymouth Virtual School for children in care. This role involves monitoring and challenging the educational support and provision for all children and young people in the care of the Local Authority, whether they are placed in the City or further afield. Prior to taking up this post in 2015, Simon had been a primary school Head teacher for 13 years. He is also a registered Ofsted Inspector.

 

Simon sees his role on the ACE LGB as being one of support for the young people, parents and staff. Also, by bringing his education background and knowledge of vulnerable young people he will be able to challenge the organisation over provision and outcomes should this ever be required.

 

ACE Plymouth has an exciting future ahead in the coming years and Simon is thoroughly looking forward to being a part of it.

Adam Michie-Carr

Profile After completing his university education at St Andrews and Durham in German and Modern History, Adam moved to Plymouth in 2008 and is currently Head of Sixth Form at Plymouth College. In the past Adam has been Head of the MFL Faculty and German Department, as well as being a boarding housemaster during his time at the college. Adam has been actively involved in both academic and pastoral provision at his current school and organised numerous trips abroad.

Adam’s passion is for the holistic education of every individual according to their own individual needs and aspirations. Education should always be made as bespoke as possible. Joining the LGB is a great honour for Adam and he hopes to make a contribution to the adherence to the highest standards of both academic and pastoral support and guidance during the length of his involvement with ACE schools.

Stefanie Clifton-Sprigg

Profile Having studied for a degree in English Literature at Royal Holloway, University of London, Stef has spent her career to date in communications, ranging from TV production through to print media.  She now works for three small businesses in Plymouth and has an array of job titles!  Her main role is Digital Director of YourSpeakingCareer.com, an online course designed to help aspiring speakers to become professionals.

Why speakers?  That’s where Stef’s other jobs come in – she is Operations Manager for two speakers; one a Professional Adventurer, the other an expert in Diversity & Inclusion. In 2015, Stef organised the logistics for an all-female expedition across the Arctic Circle. Stef’s main skills lie in communications, marketing and logistics. Stef wanted to join the LGB at ACE to widen her understanding & contribution towards her local community here in Plymouth.  She is eager to ensure that all children have access to high quality education that will set them up for a fulfilling adulthood.

Rhoda Fairbank

Profile Rhoda has been employed by ACE as a learning mentor for the past three years. She has visited and worked with students on several sites but is currently based at Bretonside. Previously, Rhoda worked for Kent County Council,

Legal and Secretariat and The Press Office. She then moved to Mid Kent College and trained to teach within the special education department. After a year and a half, Rhoda moved to Plymouth and was employed by Longcause Community Special School, a specialist in ASC, spending three years working as a teaching assistant in Key stage 4.

In her spare time Rhoda likes to find and cook interesting recipes. She also enjoys taking my dog on walks around the beautiful Devon countryside. Rhoda enjoys working in an education setting and specifically within the special education sector. She is dedicated to ACE and relish in the opportunity to help shape our future especially at this exciting time of development.

Claire Miller

Profile Claire is a teacher of science at ACE. She loves working at ACE and wanted to joining the ACE governing body to represent all the staff in all the different areas. Claire has been a teacher at ACE for 3 years and a teacher of 11 years. Before teaching she was a mental health nurse. Claire enjoys learning about science and space and has a garden with lots interesting insects and plants.
